Arm River Track to Pelion Plains and Mt Ossa

Two Senior Walkers Posted on 2006-04-06 The Approach It was a the spur of the moment - day before - decision to go. The weather forecast for the north was good. Our goal was to climb Mt Ossa and return in one day. In and out along the Arm River Track, a distance of 38 kilometers. At 7:40pm the night before, we packed and left Hobart. We drove north, non-stop, to Mole Creek. From here we followed the signs and arrived at the Arm River Track car park at about 11pm. Sleeping in the back of the station wagon we had a surprisingly good sleep under a brilliant starry night. Arm River Track to Pelion Hut Day break saw the skies clear and the temperature a cool 3°. We started walking at 7.30am. At the start, the track climbs steeply for about 40 minutes. The rest of the walk to Pelion Plains is relatively flat. Port Davey Track - Scotts Peak to Melaleuca

Senior Walkers Introduction The Port Davey Track starts from the Huon Campsite, near the end of the Scotts Peak Road. This is reached via Maydena and Frodshams Pass, about 2 to 3 hours drive west of Hobart. Scotts Peak to Junction Creek - 2 to 3 1/2 hours, medium walking. The track starts from the Huon Campsite. Wind around low hills then head south towards Junction Creek. Sections of the track can be boggy. At Junction Creek there is a ford crossing. When water level is high use the cable crossing just downstream. The campsite immediately south of the ford crossing is flood prone following heavy rain. An alternative drier site is available 600 metres further on, but does not have a toilet. Junction Creek to Watershed Camp - 7 to 9 hours, medium walking. From Junction Creek the track moves onto open plains below the Arthur Range. A well-defined track leads all the way to the Crossing River, which has campsites on both banks. Mount Anne - Day Walk

Allan Wise Introduction Regarded as Tasmania's premier day walk, Mt Anne attracts experienced bushwalkers for three main reason. One, amazing scenery and great photo opportunities. Two, It's subjected to absolutely foul weather conditions and intense exposure. And Three, The final ascent is very steep, making it hard in the best of times and almost impossible when icy or snowy. Ropes may help at the summit, most confident climbers will find it manageable. Access A permit is required for travel in any of Tasmania's national parks. Permits can be purchased from most outdoor shops or on entry to the national park. There is a Toll booth just out of Maydena, the gateway to the south west.
