Sunny Prospects
Driving
- Huon Highway to Geeveston;
- Turn right into Arve Road towards the Tahune Air Walk;
- Turn left into Picton Road (large triangular junction) about one kilometre before the Air Walk;
- Follow East Picton Road southwards, before turning right onto West Picton Road, across the bridge over the Picton River;
- Proceed around 5 kilometres before turning right into West Picton 1 (grid ref 727183);
- Proceed about 2 kilometres before turning right into West Picton 1/2 just after crossing Cook Creek (grid ref 708179); and
- Proceed just less than 1 kilometre to a cairn on the right hand side of the road, with some nearby road widening that permits parking.
Walking
- The walk starts past some clumps of cutting grass, but quickly becomes a well cut track that is straightforward to follow all the way through to Steanes Tarn;
- About halfway up a side track leads to two large glacial lakes (Riveaux and Picton) and I have been told that one of them has a beach that is wide enough to pitch a tent;
- From Steanes Tarn there is a bit of a cairned route to the summit but it is difficult to follow and the sensitive alpine vegetation will last longer if walkers use a variety of routes; and
- Good views across to Federation Peak if you choose the right day.
- The route up the South Picton Range (Mount Chapman / Burgess Bluff) commences a short distance further along the road from the Mount Picton track.
