Winter at Frenchmans Cap

It would be my sixth trip to "The Cap", and apart from Maurice, the rest of the team would be making the trip for there first time. Friday 9TH, Driving from Launceston to Derwent Bridge The first car left Launceston at 5:15pm in the evening, arriving at Derwent Bridge at 7:50pm. A meal was obtained from the Wilderness Hotel with the usual gruffness but the food was reasonably good. Mt Weld in a Day

Stuart Bowling Peak: Mt. Weld Height: 1345m Maps: 1:100k – Huon; 1:25k – Weld Ref: 654384 Distance: 14km. Points: 4 Starting point: South Weld Road (712374). Date: Saturday 28th February 2009. Time to summit & return: 10 hours (including lunch & rests). Party members: Stuart Bowling, Jeramie Spong. Mt. Weld is one of the more prominent and recognisable ranges in the south of the state, the summit proper capping the northern end of the impressive 8km long Weld Ridge. To the north of here lay the green valleys of the Weld River and the Jubilee Range, to the west the Gallagher Plateau & Anne ranges, to the south the Huon River valley and to the south east and east the unfortunate scars of extensive logging operations for which the name Weld is so recognisable to the public at large. The Coronets

Stuart Bowling Peak: The Coronets (via the Sentinel Range) Height: 876m Maps: 1:100k – Wedge; 1:25k – McPartlan Ref: 371505 Distance: 9.5km. Points: 2 Starting point: Wedge River Picnic Area (GR354539). Date: Saturday 11th October 2008. Time to summit & return: 9 hours (including lunch). Party members: Stuart Bowling, Jeramie Spong. The Coronets are located on the Northern rim of Lake Pedder, south of the Sentinel Range and offer typical South West topography of button grass plains and open ridges interspersed with quartzite tors and bands of scrub and dense forest. The views from the summit of Lake Pedder and surrounding ranges and peaks on a clear day are magnificent. It should be noted that the majority of this walk is off track and offers a long, hard day to those experienced with this type of adventure – there are many sections of dense scrub and forest and the progress is often very slow and laborious.
